Northam Cup News

The Listed 2023 Northam Cup is a 1600m quality handicap held at Northam Racecourse in Western Australia.

Taking place on a Sunday in late October the day after Melbourne’s Cox Plate Day meeting, the Northam Cup is open only to horses aged three years and older and pays $150,000, very decent for a country cup.

Horses that target the Northam Cup generally do so following non black type events elsewhere in Western Australia. The Group 3 Northerly Stakes – now run as the  Eurythmic Stakes – at Ascot has been a fairly accurate lead up race in the past. Marocchino (6th in 2022) was the last Eurythmic Stakes graduate to back-up and win the Northam Cup.

The cup series comprising the Coolgardie Cup, Boulder Cup and Kalgoorlie Cup also acts as a fairly good line for horses to take into the Northam Cup.

Many trainers choose to run their classier horses in the Northam Cup first up as a way of getting them going in time for the Perth Summer Racing Carnival.

Following the Northam Cup, better types will step up to Group 3 for the Asian Beau Stakes, Colonel Reeves Stakes or Lee Steere Stakes. The Group 1 Kingston Town Classic is a potential target for the genuinely talented sorts.

The 2021 Northam Cup form was franked with the winner Kaptain Kaos returning the following winter to win the Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1600m) in 2022.

The 2022 Northam Cup winner Marocchino went on to win the Group 2 Ted Van Heemst Stakes (2100m) at Ascot that December.

The Northam Cup 2023 ran on Sunday October 29th, 2023 and was won by the favourite Let’s Galahvant ($2.90F).

2023 Northam Cup Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Northam Cup 2023 Tips this October.

  • To Win: #12 Pompey ($3.90 at time of publish) –  BET NOW

A couple of genuine winning hopes here but sticking with the Grant & Alana Williams-trained favourite Pompey who is firming to defeat the likes of his Black-Type winning stablemate Casino Seventeen. The Xtravagant four-year-old is ultra-consistent and comes into the race having won two of his past three starts. Latest was at Ascot with more weight. Up in grade now but is proven at a mile and deserves his chance here. Working well through the grades, is from a gun stable, and was tough last start.

2023 Northam Cup Field

The 2023 Northam Cup field will be published below once confirmed on the Thursday prior to race day.

The Northam Cup 2023 final field features a quality line-up of milers led in betting by the progressive Grant & Alana Williams-trained four-year-old Pompey and his resuming stablemate Casino Seventeen who won the Pinjarra Cup back in April.

Northam Cup History

Established in 1863, the Northam Race Club has grown into one of Western Australia’s premium country racing clubs. Northam Racecourse is one of the better maintained tracks in the country around Perth, which also contributes to the fairly impressive fields they get there. The long 425 metre straight no doubt also plays a part in drawing strong finishers.

The Northam Cup has grown into a fairly important race for both trainers and punters. As one of the earliest black type races in the season, the Northam Cup attracts a lot of horses that will go on to bigger races later on. As a result, it is watched quite closely.

In 2006 and 2007 the Northam Cup was run over 2300m. Prior to that, it was run over 2200m.

In 2014 there was a dead heat in the Northam Cup results between Rebelson and Son Of Something.

Notable Northam Cup winners include Zero Engagement (2004), Sentenza (2010) and Angel Of Mercy (2013). Northam Cup results since 2000 are listed below.
